A Universal Language
I was one of those kids who was lucky enough to learn Korean when I was little then threw myself into the wonderful world of French class in junior high, high school, and college…Until I realized one day…How many Koreans do you know that speak French? Most people take one look at you and ask “What kind of Asian are you and Can you Speak Asian?” So why confused the masses further with some nonsense such as speaking French…
But then recently my boyfriend showed me this video on YouTube called CommunityChannel and it’s some adorable Asian who’s Australian and my girl friend and her husband are in Australia right now…Or is it New Zealand…Don’t let them find out because I know how they hate to be mistaken..And it forces me to wonder how many Asian’s you meet really rocking thick accents and dialects from other countries.
I mean you get me who ends up on a phone call or in person with some family or friends on the East Coast or the South and then a bottle of wine later…I’ll be spewing out verbal nonsense with a Southern Drawl like it’s 2nd nature…Whatever…
Anyways ladies and germs, that brings me to the topic of tonight. Everyone in the whole entire world has their own language or variations of language that many outside of their country cannot understand. It makes for communication very difficult. As proven by me when working with Chinese clients and I’m trying to explain legal real estate mumbo jumbo…
The one sure fire way of uniting everyone with a universal language, is music. I’ve been blessed with an insane ability to play music: vocals, piano, saxophone, flute…And I’m sure some obscure form of harmonica and spoons…But none the less regardless where you go…You can play music and you can be sure to touch someone’s soul and make them smile.
While I’m a firm believer in hip hop/rap of present to be annoying, drawn out, repetitive, and a complete waste of my time, I still hold out a lot of hope for rock, country, jazz, classical, and etc in which to connect every single person through a series of notes…almost as if every person represented a different note across a staff line. Interesting thought isn’t it? Each piece of music tells a story…a beautiful sweet story, followed by a maelstrom of turbulence, concluding with the clouds clearing after a storm. And it is each person’s story that can be transposed into something that can be shared amongst others…and you wouldn’t have to ever open your mouth to say a single word.
Next time you listen to a song, just close your eyes, listen to the words, the notes, and let it suck you in…get lost in it.
I recently had a conversation with Jeff about how I’m a musician of the classic, ordinary sort…but with the world being so heavy into technology, he has found a way in which to thrust music into the 21st century and make something beautiful, creative, and very futuristic. In case we need a recap…Jeff is a DJ who plays for the radio and at clubs across the West Coast. While wildly modest, I believe him to be extremely talented, gifted, and a musician who has found a way to mix, rebuild, edit, and scratch his way into the future. Taking an art developed years ago and mastering it into something that has created a whole new type of music for today’s generation.
Anyways, that’s my music soapbox schpeel for the evening…Soon to follow with one more deeper heartfelt blog…But in the meantime by friends…
Forge your way into the future…Leave footprints on the hearts of the world through whatever avenue you can create in which to tell your story.
